10 QUESTIONS: GETTING TO KNOW LEE WHITWELL

1. What inspired you to start playing pickleball, and what keeps you passionate about it?

My good friend Lisa Palcic bribed me into playing with a case of beer, and haven't looked back! Passion stems from the pickleball community and friendships that are made.

2. Can you share one memorable moment from a recent tournament that stood out to you?

They are all pretty memorable but definitely the fans make it extra special for me.

3. What advice would you give to someone just starting to play pickleball?

Take a learn to play class, meet people, find programming at your level and have fun. I am working with GAME CHANGEHER EVENTS to also empower woman in the sport.

4. What does your training routine look like both, on and off the court?
A lot of drilling, weights and cardio. Focused game play, where I am implementing what I'm drilling or working on.

5. How has pickleball evolved since you started playing, and what excites you most about its future?

Paddle technology has definitely evolved. Paddles have more grit and pop, than when I first started. The ball can be manipulated much more now. Seeing the recreational side of things explode, along with communities coming together nationally and internationally. I see first-hand how much joy pickleball brings to people and that's truly special. The Pro level keeps evolving but the amateur level, is where the magic is at.

6. What’s your mindset like going into a tournament, and how do you stay focused under pressure?
My mindset has always been “Be Ready to Battle”. It’s easier when you know you have to put in the work. And honestly, it’s a constant reminder to focus on the ball and “play” the ball. Not worrying about your opponents. The more you focus on your shot skills and the game plan; you will often have better results.

7. How do you balance competition, training and life outside of pickleball?
“laughing” Extremely bad! Just kidding, I have a great partner, friends and family who keep me grounded. They provide the perfect reset when I'm off the court.

 8. What's one aspect of pickleball that you think people often overlook, but is essential for success?

The importance of training the eyes. We spend a lot of time drilling shots but often overlook where our eyes should be focused. Also, I believe we should have focus on the process, rather than the results. Knowing how we are hitting shots and why it worked or didn’t. This usually will help us eliminate unforced errors.

9. Do you have any specific pre-game rituals or post-game recovery tips?
Pre-game: Visualization of where my serves, returns, thirds, blocks and any other shot I see. Trying to capture those shots and seeing myself hit them flawlessly.
Post-game recovery: Big fan of Kineon Red Light Therapy, Hi-Dow Tens unit and recovery labs magnesium soak. Definitely try to do whatever I can to keep my body together and healthy so I can keep competing.

10. How does Grizzlee Gripz products enhance your performance on the court, and what do you like most about our products?

I "LOVE" the grips! They have phenomenal colors, but more importantly they are phenomenal over grips. The Grizzlee Gripz Enhanced Grip Spray helps keep my grip tacky longer, especially when playing in the Florida heat and humidity.
